Have you ever wondered why women's clothing tends to not have pockets? There's a reason, and it's an ugly one: women historically did not need pockets, because they had no possessions.

Until very recently, women in America had second-class financial status. Women used to wear a Chatelaine (chain) - Wikipedia to carry a house key, which a trusting husband might, if he felt inclined, grant his wife. The Chatelaine also carried small sundries like a pair of scissors, a button hook, etc, which a husband might give to his wife, maybe, to show that they were actually hers -- because otherwise, anything a woman had on her person was, by definition, stolen from her husband. Women could not own any property, not even personal items.

February 24, 2022: so it's war, then.

This is pointless, criminal, and inhumane, the result of narcissistic and brutal leaders stoking their own egos, and mostly about oil and money. Just like Iraq, in other words. And likely to result in almost as many deaths.

The USA continues to dwarf all other countries for Covid cases and deaths. We're Number One, in a bad way. And we will likely hit one million deaths before long -- except that the excess mortality rates indicate that we passed one million deaths months ago. Thankfully, it looks like January 13 was the USA peak for Omicron, for new cases. The Active Case and Daily Deaths peaks were both January 31, and those numbers remain very high.

The 45% refusal rate means that the USA will probably "top out" at about 80% -- 82% vaccinated. That leaves 60 million Americans constantly (and permanently) brewing new Covid Variants and keeping the pandemic alive. The current mortality rates for unvaccinated people will probably hold at around 2%, which means that, eventually, 1,200,000 more Americans will die due to anti-vax propaganda.

Considering the fact that WWII killed around 420,000 Americans, the people who tell anti-vax lies are really getting the job done for killing Americans.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ will give you lots of accurate information, though the daily variations can be difficult to parse.
https://ourworldindata.org/explorers/coronavirus-data-explorer has a 7-day rolling average option, which smooths out all of the variations in daily reporting methods, giving you a much clearer picture of what's happening.

It is true that anti-vaccine (and anti-mask) stupidity is a massive problem in the USA, but it is very encouraging to see that another ten percent of the American population got themselves vaccinated in the last 25 days. It is clear that for some, it's "vaccine hesitancy" rather than outright opposition, and for others, it's a matter of overcoming procrastination, and finally feeling the pressure due to big local Delta outbreaks.

Finding out exactly who (in America) is getting sick and who is dying is a very difficult task. We can make some obvious guesses, based on widely known trends: people who refuse to be vaccinated are also, most frequently, those refusing to wear masks, refusing to reduce their exposure, and refusing to avoid dense crowds. It's not a logical stretch to assume that this is going to make them the group most likely to get infected, and most likely to die. The percentage of cases and fatalities from that group will inevitably overshadow the statistics for vaccinated people who take precautions -- but it's a likelihood, not a know statistic. It will probably take years before we can truly see, with high accuracy, how these dynamics work out.

During times of extreme fire danger, which is, like, ALL THE TIME NOW, fireworks are often banned, but local governments sometimes claim that fireworks aren't "explosives" (which are banned under Stage 2 restrictions.)
And, some local elected officials do not believe that fireworks cause wildfires, which is patently untrue (fireworks cause over 10,000 wildfires a year):
Even so, radical right-wing state legislators and governors are just tickled to legalize and encourage them, because "freedom": Law change brings certain fireworks back after decades-long ban.

If you've watched the lovely movie "The Dig" then you have an appreciation of the treasures found at the Sutton Hoo site. They are magnificent. A closer look at some of the photos is illuminating. I was surprised to learn that a brooch from that area -- possibly from that site -- was likely plundered a century earlier, and rested in a museum not far away. There has been a fine replica made, restoring the original's grandeur, and it's really beautiful.

Just after the attacks on 9-11, one of my neighbors was called up for active service, with a higher security clearance. I was visited by a retired federal agent who had also just been called back up, and he was doing the background checks with neighbors. He asked me all the questions you'd expect about my neighbor -- which were all just fine. My neighbor was a good and utterly reliable person. At the end of the interview, the agent asked me, "Is there anything else you'd like to say?" I paused, and I said, "Yes. I believe you can tell a lot about a man by the way he treats his dog." The interviewer went stock still, his face went completely blank, and he was suddenly watching me like a hawk. I went on to say, "My neighbor is really, really good to his dog. He plays with him in the back yard every day. He takes him on long walks, and he talks to him like he's just his best friend in the whole world. They take turns carrying his favorite stuffed toy." The interviewer's face broke into the biggest smile, and he said, "I like the way you think."

I still think you can tell a lot about a person by the way they treat their dog.

2. Relies heavily on anecdotes: The evidence largely comes from personal experiences and testimonials.

3. Cherry picks evidence: Uses favorable evidence while ignoring or minimizing disconfirming evidence.

  • Appeal to tradition: Asserts that something is good or true because it’s old.

  • Ad hominem: Attacks the source of the argument instead of the substance.
10. Lacks adequate peer review: Avoids critical scrutiny by the scientific community.
